It supports forests and plants, stores water, provides nutrients, captures carbon and is home to countless organisms. In short, healthy soils are essential for life on Earth.

On this interactive tour, discover how soils in Switzerland have formed, and why they are so important for nature, agriculture and the climate. Using a variety of scientific methods, you will examine the soil yourself and experience how researchers uncover its hidden properties.

After the tour, you might find yourself looking at your garden soil differently and starting to uncover its properties – just like a soil scientist.
